Boiled or Steamed What is the Difference?

steaming

One healthy way to cook is using water. Water is used to boil and steam many types of foods. From pasta, rice, vegetables to meat this type of cooking leaves those foods in their healthiest cooked forms. No oil or fats are incorporated into the water when cooking in this fashion. What’s the difference between boiling and steaming? Let’s check it out to see.

Boiling Is Effective

Boiling is a unique and effective way of cooking. It is similar to steaming but slightly different. Boiling requires the food to actually sit in the water. You can boil vegetables, meats and seafood. With boiling the taste, look and even a little of the health values are also different from steaming.

Boiling or cooking food directly in the water gives the nutrients a chance to move from the food to the water. It also doesn’t spice up the food nor does it give it that appetizing color. Boiled foods don’t have a lot of flavor because the enhanced flavors are lost in the water. This is known as blanching foods. Also with no added oil or fat you get the fresh flavor of the food instead of the taste of additives. Adding seasoning to your boiled food will help to enhance the flavor.

There are many positives to boiling:

•    It doesn’t require any added fats leaving it a healthier choice

•    It’s easy; it doesn’t require hovering over the stove for hours

•    It takes those tough pieces of meat and makes them tender

•    It is perfect for large scale cooking

Steam is Unique

To steam foods is to boil water causing it to evaporate into a fine mist. The steam and not the water is what cook the food. Something important to remember when steaming is that you are not putting the food directly in water. The food is suspended over the top the water letting the steam rise up to cook the food. For those who are watching there calories and fats, steaming is a very effective way to cook food and make it healthy. .

Steaming basically eliminates the opportunity to over cook the food. Steaming foods is a slow method of cooking so if the food is left longer than need be, the steam will not have cooking power to over cook the food. Steaming uses a lot more energy than any other cooking method. If steam is cooking the food it must stay at a constant stable temperature to cook through.

Most cooks only use the steam method of cooking for vegetables but some meats can be steamed. Beef, pork and even chicken can be steamed. It gives it a very different taste that some may not like. Seafood is a very common food to be steamed. Fish does very well and even shrimp taste wonderful.

As you can see there are few differences when it comes to boiling or steaming those foods. Yet both are an effective unique way of cooking. Grab a steamer or fill a pot with water and see for yourself just how great they both can be.

Cooking Under Pressure

pressure

Cooking under high pressure can be a scary thought. Yet pressure is one of foods best friends. Pressure cookers cook under extremely high heat as well as high pressure. The hotter the foods cook the faster they cook. In favor a pressure cooker can cut your cooking time by over 70 percent. Can you imagine all that free time. Let’s find out what the pros and cons of pressure cooking can be.

Don’t Stress the Pressure

I’m sure some of you remember that awful noise grandma’s pressure cooker made. That ear popping rattling sound was anything but appetizing. Then Grandma ended up throwing her hands up when the food was popping up on the ceiling. Those days are long gone. Pressure cookers are designed today to create delicious meals in a short amount time with out all those hassles. It is now effective and user friendly.

Pressure cookers cook at temperatures that are higher than the boiling point. The heat is always quickly and evenly scattered throughout the food. This type of cooking eliminates the chances of bacteria and that awful food poisoning.

Time is of the essence with a pressure cooker. Slow cookers take hours to cook. Ovens take at least an hour and sometimes two or three hours. Pressure cookers can cook those same meals in a matter of minutes.  The unique design allows you to cut cooking time in more than half. Everybody can appreciate a little less stress and timelines in the kitchen. With a pressure cooker, cooking on short notice is a breeze.

There is no submerging the foods in water with a pressure cooker. All you need is just enough water to create steam. Less water means more vitamins and nutrients stay in the food and aren’t cooked away.  Because all of the foods are cooked in one area all the juices and flavors flow and melt together into one savory meal.

The Downfalls of Pressure

With pressure cooking there is a major risk of over cooking your food. Foods cook very fast in a pressure cooker. Knowing the recipe and the ins and outs of your cooker will help to avoid those overcooked meals.

Another fault the pressure cooker has is the possibility of a pressure explosion. Today’s versions are much safer because they are fitted with a release valve. This allows the steaming to escape when the pressure reaches a desired point. This in turn helps to release the pressure instead of having a build up which can lead to an explosion.

To help keep your pressure cooking safe make sure the pressure cooker has at least two pressure release devices making for double the protection against the possibility of explosions. Also a safety lock lid will keep the lid from being opened once the pressure reaches a certain level. One last tip, be sure the pressure cooker has a quick pressure release valve that allows for manual control the pressure within the pot.

These are just a few things that make pressure cooking a good idea. Pressure cookers aren’t a scary way of cooking any more. They are economical and save time and money which is always a plus. Try pressure cooking and see just how great that fast cooked meal can taste.

Be Waterlogged on the 4th of July

boat-water

boat-waterIf you are lucky enough to have a boat to celebrate the 4th of July then you need to do so. You can swim, water-ski, water board and just lay and tan on your own personal place of freedom! Preparing food to take care of your family can cause some problems without some tried but true storage methods.

Coolers and food storage bags are a must for any on board meals. Coolers can keep your beverages cold as well as certain food items. Two coolers is, of course, the optimum thing to do. Put your cold beverages in one and then load the ice…in the second cooler load your ice then your food products.

Try buying white, red and blue plates, napkins and silverware to keep in the spirit of the 4th of July. It’s not necessary but can be quite festive. Also, plan on where you can go to buy more ice if you need to. Remember, cold is better than hot!

The best thing to do is fix things at home before going on the boat. Try fixing cheese cubes which are easy to eat and nutritious as well. Veggies are another great choice, just cut them up before leaving home and put in individual bags. Cold sandwiches are another great choice. Make the sandwiches then wrap them in individual foil packages and then place in a Ziploc bag. Add some chips or pretzels and you have a great meal!

During the off time, you still have to entertain the kids. How about making a 4th of July windsock? For the younger children, some help will be required but for the older ones, they can do it themselves.

Remove the bottom from a Quaker oatmeal container. Place and tape blue paper all over the cylinder. Cut out white stars from construction paper and tape to the blue paper. Using white and red crepe paper cut long strips to tape on one end of your cylinder. On the other end, punch 4 holes so you can tie two string pieces to them to make you windsock work. To finish it off, cut one long piece of string and tie to the two shorter ones to hang it by.

This will burn off the 30 minutes you are supposed to not swim after eating and make everyone happy. This is a great idea for the evening meal, because you know that fireworks are coming up and the kids will calm down and watch the great show above them. Drink, eat and be merry and have a happy and safe Independence Day!

Roast 3 hours or until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the thigh reaches 180 degrees and juice runs clear.

This recipe is one of the simplest ways to roast a turkey. The butter makes the turkey very moist and enhances the flavor. More water can be added 1/4 C at time during roasting if necessary.
