The Good the Bad and the Ugly of Leftovers

leftovers

For some, leftovers can be a doom sentence. While some of us look at leftovers as the best thing in the world. All will agree that the leftovers with all that green furry topping are pretty ugly. Leftovers eaten three nights in a row can be pretty bad. Leftovers made into great tasting meals can be a good thing and believe it or not can save money. Let’s take a look at ways to use those leftovers to our benefit.

Re-purposing Those Leftovers

Holidays – Leftovers during holidays usually surmount into outrageous quantities. If you are getting tired of the same old turkey or ham sandwiches for the following week, try changing it up for breakfast. Combine the mashed potatoes, stuffing and diced meat in a pan creating a little creator for an egg. Pop it all in the oven for ten minutes on 350 degrees and you have a hearty egg in a nest for breakfast. This is a complete meal with your meat, grains and dairy. It’s also not a bad way to start a day off from the turkey hang-over from the night before.

Meat – A staple of many households is ground meat. It is a perfect start to practice re-purposing leftovers on. A couple pounds of ground beef can be used for hamburgers, then the next day for tacos and finally as an addition to spaghetti sauce or a warm crock pot of chili. Steaks are also great leftovers to utilize for a couple of days. Eaten first as a main dish with mashed potatoes and green beans, cut into strips to top a hearty salad and finally cut into chunks for stews or soups.

Remember to have fun with you leftovers. Try a different spice or mix and match them to create a new treat for everyone to try. Just remember that the taste is what is most important. Watch the ingredients while watching the taste. Sounds hard? It’s not. Let’s take a look at how to accomplish just that.

Ingredients

Let’s take the hamburger meat as an example. What ingredients did you put into it for the actual hamburger? Salt, pepper and maybe some Italian seasoning were used. Keep these ingredients in mind when re-purposing the hamburger because it may not need more salt in the dish you are trying to create. If there was plenty of salt for the hamburger, cut out the salt in the new recipe and see if that works well. Bread crumbs, ketchup and possibly even some A-1. If you went heavy on the A-1 sauce, this might not work well re-purposed as a breakfast casserole. A meatloaf on the other hand might be the way to go. Just remember what you put in will determine what kind of dish you want to reuse the meat for.

Taste

Let’s use a holiday breakfast make over as an example. One can only assume that since mashed potatoes, stuffing and turkey all go together in a meal, that they can all be used together in a single dish. Pretending with your mouth can get you a long way when cooking. If you think it will taste good together, go for it. If your instincts tell you otherwise then don’t try it. Think about how the food will taste together to get a good idea of the expected outcome.

Yes there is a good, bad and ugly to leftovers. Reusing leftovers can be a challenge but it can also be a blast. Have fun with your leftovers. Remember to keep tasting as you cook to insure you are on the right track. Most importantly be sure to use those leftovers before they become a green furry mess that ends up in the garbage disposal. Try reusing your leftovers to make hearty nutritious meals for your family and watch the dollars begin to stack up.

Mother’s Day Meal Plans

fruitandflowersAccording to tradition we have turkey at Thanksgiving, ham at Christmas or both at Easter. What we do not have is a specific food that says “Mother’s Day”. Not having a specific food for Mother’s Day can either be a curse or a blessing, depending upon your outlook.

Your job will be simple if you already know what your Moms favorite food or meal is. First, make a menu of those items, create your grocery list, shop for the items and find the recipes, the last step is to cook the meal. Here are a few ideas for a Mother’s Day meal if you don’t have a clue what to prepare.

Breakfast Ideas

Does breakfast in bed sound like a good idea? Maybe to you, Mom may just be laying in bed worrying about the mess you are making. Why not just get the kids ready and this will allow Mom to shower and dress in peace. Then you can treat everyone to breakfast at her favorite diner or restaurant. If you are preparing breakfast for Mom make her favorite dishes and by all means don’t forget to clear the table, wash the dishes and put them away.

Brunch/Lunch Ideas

Why not let Mom sleep in a little on Mother’s Day? This will mean that you will have to tend to any little ones that might be around. Then serve her brunch or lunch. You can be preparing the meal while Mom is waking up and getting ready to start the day. This will be a surprise when she walks into the kitchen and finds a delicious meal waiting for her. Let’s not forget to take the responsibility of cleaning up. Make plans for Mom to do a relaxing activity while she is waiting for you to finish with the clean-up. A happy Mother is well rested and has food in her belly.

Dinner Ideas

Remember that Mother’s Day is on Sunday, a full day. This may mean that you have to wait until evening to shower your Mom with her edible treats. Are you not able to prepare the meal yourself? With a little advanced preparation it is still possible. You can still surprise Mom by ordering a meal from your local grocery store, restaurant or other food delivery service. Make sure that you don’t forget to include the paper goods with this. This will ensure that you have a “home cooked meal” without the dirty dishes that come along with preparing dinner.

A way to your Mom’s heart is through food. Food is one way to express love and appreciation to Mom this Mother’s Day. Any effort that you put forth to making this day special for Mom will be truly appreciated by her.

Mother’s Day Fun for Kids

Serve Mom Breakfast in Bed

It’s usually always Mom that is up at the crack of dawn preparing breakfast for everyone. This would be a great gift for Mom, breakfast in bed. This will allow Mom to sleep in and then surprise her with breakfast in bed.

Keep this breakfast simple. Serve her that favorite muffin or toast, or even a small dish of fresh fruit. Don’t forget to add the steaming cup of hot coffee or tea. Make it even more special with a flower or a card with a special poem straight from your heart.

Give Her the Day to Herself

Of course, Mom loves us very much. Mom’s are always at our side and ready to help out anytime we need something, right? Mom will be so excited when you present her with a coupon for a full day to do whatever it is she wants to do.

This will only require a pretty piece of paper. Then you can create your own special gift certificate allowing her to have one day of total piece and quite. This can be decorated using markers, crayons or stickers.

Present your Mother on Mother’s Day with the gift certificate filled with love. Buy Mom a book that you know she wants to read? This would be great for her day off. Add a cup or a mug with her favorite beverage. This will allow Mom to enjoy her favorite drink while she reads. To help the day remain quite ask the grown up helping you to make sure you are kept busy as well as supervised so that Mom doesn’t have a thing to worry about the whole day long.

Spend Quality Family Time Together

Do you think Mom would rather spend time as a family instead of alone? Plan something fun that Mom will enjoy doing. After all, Mom spends a lot of time making sure that you are entertained. Mom’s often put their own interests aside because they know that you would enjoy doing something else. Repay the kindness to Mom by planning a day of family fun activities that you might not ordinarily do.

Perhaps Mom likes art, take her to the local museum and even have lunch there. If there is a concert Mom would like to see then buy family tickets for all to enjoy. The possibilities for things to do on Mother’s Day are endless. With a little imagination and a little grown up help this Mother’s Day will be one that your Mom will always hold dear to her heart.

Host a Mother-Daughter Tea Party

teaMother’s Day is right around the corner. Now is the time to start planning your special activities for this special day. Have you ever considered a Mother-Daughter tea party? This can include family and friends also. Below are just a few ideas to get your tea party rolling.

Keep in mind that simple is better. If you keep things simple it will be easier and more elegant without all of the worries. Don’t have a full tea set sitting around? You can find some very nice sets in places like Goodwill, flea markets or thrift stores at a very reasonable price. Another idea is to ask everyone to bring their own special set. This will allow everyone to tell why these sets are so special to them.

First things first, decide on a particular theme for your tea party. Below are three simple yet special themes you can try.

The Mother-Daughter Theme

This works well with Mothers who have grown up daughters. Keep the decorations simple like small flower arrangements that will grace the table alongside the tea cups and saucers. This setting will be pleasing to the eyes and the heart. The menu can consist of finger sandwiches, cookies and scones. Have the Mothers and daughters write a note or letter to each sharing how much they love and appreciate each other.

The Mommy & Me Theme

For the Moms of younger girls this will be really cute. Mom can dress up elegantly and the girls can rummage through Mom’s closet to find dresses, shoes, gloves and jewelry to be equally as elegant as Mom. This tea party can include cookies or simple finger foods along with lemonade, punch or hot chocolate. Create the invitations to request every child to bring a stuffed animal guest to share the table.

The Summer Time Tea Party

We all know that Mother’s Day is celebrated in May. This is just prior to the official start of the summer season. Why not take this opportunity to serve flavored iced tea instead. Instead of tea cups use iced tea glasses and serve the typical summer time appetizers. Everyone can dress in straw hats, sunglasses and flip-flops or sandals. This should get you excited about the warmer weather to come.

Brewing tea actually isn’t that difficult. Once you learn the ins and outs you will be able to brew the perfect pot of tea. You can start by purchasing the sampler boxes of tea. This will allow everyone a choice. You can also add flavorings to a glass of iced tea for a refreshing taste.

These are just a few suggestions for a Mother- Daughter tea party. These ideas will make your tea party a success and allow you to have fun and enjoy each others company. Who knows this could become a tradition that could last for generations to come.

Make Your Easter Egg Hunt Exciting

easteregghuntThe eggs are decorated, the Easter Bunny has arrived and it’s time for the grand Easter egg hunt. This year you want to do something different. The kids might be older, adults may want to join in or maybe your just tired of the same ole same ole. Instead of hiding the eggs in the grass or behind the furniture why not try one of these ideas to make your hunt more exciting.

A Scavenger Hunt

Remember the scavenger hunts of yester year? They were so much fun and challenging too. A scavenger hunt can be suited for any age. For smaller children have them find certain colors such as red or blue eggs. The can have low numbers attached to them for little ones to find. The simpler the hunt the easier.

For older children add in a few different items such as a chocolate rabbit, cream eggs or even a DVD or CD. You can hide these types of items outside with the eggs just be sure to place them in baggies so they don’t get ruined.

Get the neighbors involved. Give your neighbor the DVD that has been placed on the list. When your teenager knocks on their door they need to make sure they go down the list until the have found what the neighbor is holding.

Egg Trail

This type of hunt is intended for the smaller children. Begin by placing small foil wrapped chocolate eggs in a trail. You can start from their bedroom and go through the house to where you end with their Easter basket. Remember your child’s attention span and try not to overwhelm them. Add a few of the larger decorated eggs and watch their eyes light up.

Bible Verse

This is a fun and educational way to have an Easter egg hunt for older children and adults. If you have small children pair them up with an older child so they can have fun too.

The way to play is give each team an envelope with 4 to 6 Bible verses. The verse will contain a clue as to where the first egg will be found. When they get to the last one their Easter basket will be waiting.

It’s not as hard as one might think. Find Bible verses that say something about sleeping. Highlight the word if you want to make it a little easier for them to find the clue. Sleeping would be the clue for them to look in the bedroom. Something around rocks would be a clue for finding the prize under or around rocks. It’s pretty simple and everyone will have a lot of fun looking for the grand prize.

Easter Egg Challenge

This is more of a party game than an Easter egg hunt but is just as much fun. Around each egg you hide attach a strip of paper with a task to be accomplished. For instance one might say to hop on one leg or to sing a song or repeat a fairy tale such as Mary Had a Little Lamb. Once they have completed the task they receive a treat for their hard work. Keep the video camera close by you may never see anything like it again.

Use your imagination when it comes to that Easter egg hunt. Just about anything can be adapted to make your hunt fun and exciting year after year.

Valentine’s Day Dinner for Two

No one takes the day off for Valentine’s Day, so dinner is usually the meal of choice for couples to share. This year, instead of eating out, use your extra cash to create a bistro like setting in your home. Serve up a romantic dinner for two this year that you put together.

The first thing to decide is how fancy you desire this dinner date to be. You can keep it simple and spend more time whipping up a generous dessert or vice versa. Knowing the special person in question like you do, the choice won’t be too hard.

Simple Dinner Ideas

For those of you, who feel the need for speed, go with a dish that is easy to prepare. Since there will be just the two of you, opt for Cornish hens instead of a big roasting chicken. They are so small that you can marinate these little beauties before baking them for a flavor that will infuse through the meat.

Maybe red meat is more to your liking. Find the best cuts of steak or a small roast to be the main dish. New York strip steaks or a T-bone will have everyone’s mouth watering. You don’t usually eat it every day because they are so expensive so treat yourself and your companion. Steaks don’t take long to cook either.

Any dish that can be prepared ahead of time and slipped in the oven on Valentine’s Day is considered a simple dinner. Fix a casserole meal with only a few ingredients. You can do wonders with chicken breasts, rice, and cream soup.

Fancier Fare

Some of you may use Valentine’s Day as the time to stretch your cooking repertoire. In that case, you want to tantalize your sweetie with a feast for the eyes and the palate. It will take some time to prepare such a meal but that’s okay since it’ll be for a special person.

For a welcome change, consider doing a multiple course dinner. Serve an appetizer, then a salad, and then the dinner meal. Follow with a decadent dessert and coffee or a cognac. He or she will be impressed with a presentation like that.

Set the Mood

While dinner is cooking, have some sort of snack to set the mood for the meal and the rest of the evening. A few strawberries with a glass of champagne aren’t a bad way to begin. The combination of sweet strawberries and sparkling champagne will tickle the tongue and relax you both.

Are you thinking of a romantic dinner this year? Stay home and prepare the meal yourself. Make it a night to remember.

Family Valentine’s Dinner Ideas

CHANGCHUN, CHINA - FEBRUARY 14: A teddy bear ...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Kids like to celebrate Valentine’s Day just like adults. Even if you have ideas about romantic plans for the evening, consider having dinner with the kids. Here are some ideas for a great dinner with the entire family.

Kids love to cook. It is an opportunity for them to make a mess and not get in trouble for it. Let them help with the dinner on Valentine’s Day. They probably have a few ideas for the meal.

Don’t expect a full seven course meal. Besides the fact that it takes too long to prepare, kids have simpler tastes than that. And, if you want to get them to bed at a decent hour so you still have time to spend together, choose a dish with minimal preparation.

Italians are known for love. Try an Italian dish for Valentine’s Day. Instead of ordering from Domino’s, create a pizza at home. Using a store-bought crust, roll it out and cut it into the shape of a heart. The heart will have to be exaggerated because once the dough rises the pizza will spread out and not look like a heart anymore.

Italians are also big on spaghetti. It takes about thirty minutes at the most to put together a spaghetti dinner. Add a salad for a filling meal to celebrate the holiday.

Burgers and fries are a simple meal but one that kids and the entire family can enjoy. Get the grill going or a grill pan. After the burgers are done, place them on a bun and use a heart shaped cookie cutter to turn those ordinary burgers into lovin’ from the grill.

When it comes to family, the meal will be special because it involves everyone celebrating their love together. For parents, a dinner complete with some of your child’s favorite dishes will make them smile. Family dinners on Valentine’s Day can be eclectic-the meal doesn’t have to have one theme but can be a combination.

Allow each person in the family to make a dish for the dinner. They can come up with their own idea of what to surprise everyone with for dinner. The kids will need your help shopping for what they need and using the stove, but you can still act surprised when they bring their finished creation to the table.

Valentine’s Day dinner for the family offers an opportunity to express sentiments of love to each member of your family. With busy schedules, making time to celebrate love together is a rare treat.
