Have Fun Saving and Sharing Tips

girlsshopping

Finding great deals is an exciting adventure, but it is not an adventure to relish alone. By sharing shopping tips with friends and family, everyone can participate and be enveloped with the excitement of scoring the best deals. Here are a few ideas on how to share some shopping tips with those you love.

Over the past year, with the recession growing on people’s minds, the use of coupons has become an art. Help others find this fine art and teach them what you know. Compare receipts after every shopping trip to see who saved the most, both in total dollars and percentage of the final bill. For instance, one person may have saved $100 on their trip, while the other saved almost 80%.

Get together for coupon clipping and see who can find the most coupons for a certain item, or who can find the biggest coupon amount. Rotate homes each week and make sure you have some food at this get together.

List an item each week and see who can get it the cheapest. Let’s take Cheerios as an example. By the end of the week, the goal is to be able to combine the most coupons and store deals to get a box of Cheerios the cheapest. Of course, this is only one idea as far as making a game with your shopping habits.

Another possibility is to go through the week and see who can find the best deal, not even worrying about the category that it is in. Let’s say someone found a pair of shoes that were originally $300 and ended up with them, in hand, for $50, while another person purchased a certain brand of cereal for free, even though it never goes on sale. This game will have to be judged on a personal system, between friends because it is difficult to assign a point value across categories. The winner is whoever the group thought got the best deal on what they bought.

This goes right along with making a game of frugality. Invite a group of friends over and have each one bring a dish. To add to the difficulty, create a spending cap when making the dish. For instance, no prepared dish will be over five dollars. This forces people to get clever with their shopping and allows everyone else in attendance to get different ideas for frugal shopping and cooking. If the honor system won’t work for you, then have everyone bring in their receipts and award a prize to the best dish and also the least expensive meal.

The point is, when you share your shopping tips with others, everyone can win. Money is saved and fun is had at the same time. By sharing shopping tips with friends and family, you have just one more avenue to connect on, and isn’t that the whole point? Sure, saving money is great, but why not have some fun with those closest to you at the same time.

Host a New Years Eve Potluck

confetti

confettiBring your family and friends together on New Years Eve with a potluck dinner. Each household can contribute something when you have a potluck dinner. That way, the responsibility of the food is not on just one person or family.

If you are fortunate enough to have other members of your family around, plan a potluck dinner to bring in the New Year. Begin by setting your plan in motion.

Start with the planning. Find a time when everyone can meet to hash out the details. You can come up with a menu together and then divide it into parts so that each household knows what they are bringing. Begin with what you may already have in your home. If anyone has paper goods, sodas or the makings of a dish, that will save money.

Set the time. Keep in mind that family members may have other activities planned for the evening. Usually earlier is better. Decide which family will host the dinner. You can rotate each year so that no one is missed.

Pre-dinner fun – Bring everyone together an hour or two ahead of time to spend quality time together. One activity that gets everyone up and on their feet is interactive video games. Anyone have a Wii in the house? Playing a game like Guitar Hero or Super Smash Bros. Brawl will fuel the appetite.

Don’t forget the card games. Families can have a great time playing Hearts, Rummy and Spades. For the kids, there’s Old Maid, Go Fish and Uno to name a few. Make it interesting and play for a golden prize of candy or small change.

Potluck – What are you serving that smells so good? Set up a table where everyone can serve themselves buffet-style. To avoid a messy rug or floor, place drinks in the kitchen on the counter along with cups and a bowl of ice. Using paper products makes clean up easy for the hosting family.

If you live in the south, no New Year’s meal would be complete without the traditional foods that may bring good fortune in the year to come. These include black-eyed peas for wealth, pork for prosperity and cornbread for gold.

Dessert will put the finishing touches on your potluck meal. Each family can bring their own offering for the after-dinner treat to add variety. The taste of these endless treats will give a sweet touch to your New Year celebration.

Post-dinner fun – Before everyone gets away, try this activity. Go around the room and let each person tell one thing that they would like to accomplish in the New Year. Now, your family can help encourage you to meet that goal over the next twelve months.

A potluck dinner is a great way to get friends and family together to ring a New Year. Have some food, some laughs and make new memories that you can treasure for a lifetime.

Making Your New Years Eve Celebration a Family Affair

happynewyearpastel

happynewyearpastelStaying at home to celebrate New Years Eve? What a great way to start out the New Year. Spending time with your family at home can start a new tradition with a lot of wonderful memories. Here are few ways to share a New Years Eve celebration with those who mean the most to you.

• Board games. On a regular night it might be hard to get everyone together to have a family game night. On this night, everyone is at home. Bring back a little of those childhood years with games like Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders, Sorry, Life or even card games. Old Maid, Crazy Eight and War are at the top of the card game list. For a large family, set up more than one game station then everyone can play what they like.

• Team games. This is when people traditionally play charades, drawing games, trivia games and other type of games such as these. Divide into teams and see who can put on the best game face. Keep changing teams so that each family member gets to be on a team with each other. You can also make up your own games like a team scavenger hunt throughout the house.

• Watch movies. There will be enough time before midnight for everyone to throw a movie they like into the mix. You can give your movie night a theme. Choose a variety of movies celebrating other holidays in the year. You’ll have scary, funny, romantic, dramatic and jingle bells thrown in for good measure.

• Reminisce. Bring out the photo albums. Who is that kid in the plaid pants and butterfly collar shirt? It might be you. This is a great time to bond as a family and reminisce of old memories. There may be a few pictures of folks you don’t remember. Tell some interesting stories about some of the photos. Before you know it, everyone’s sides will threaten to burst from laughter.

• Bake. All this other fun may make you want to feed your sweet tooth. For those who want to, let them make a dessert for the family to try. The more desserts you have, the more yummy goodness you can enjoy.

If you spending time at home with the family this New Years Eve enjoy. These five ideas offer fun for the family who wants to spend time celebrating together.

Host a Theme Dinner This Christmas

tableholidayfood1

tableholidayfood1Christmas dinner always seems to be a mad crazy rush. Sure the family gets together and great time but it can always be better. Why not host a Christmas theme dinner this year.

Are you asking yourself what is a theme dinner? It’s a dinner based around a specific theme. Of course in this instance the theme should be based around Christmas. Here are a few ideas for a Christmas theme dinner:

• Family history of holiday meals

Think back in your own family history. Maybe your family is of European, Asian or African descent. Fill the table this year with foods that reflect what would have been eaten by your family members hundreds of years ago. Research the traditional dress of the time so that everyone can look the part.

• Spiritual themes

Christmas is not just about spending time together but the spiritual significance. Everyone could dress as the people did in biblical times and enjoy foods prepared as they would have been enjoyed in the New Testament around the time that Jesus was born.

• Holiday recipes

Holiday recipes come from all sorts of cookbooks. You may decide on a down home Christmas meal or eat dinner as the Pilgrims may have enjoyed it with pheasant instead of turkey as the main dish. Try a recipe book based on holiday songs or poems. You’ll find a lot of references to meal ideas with those.

• Regional foods

Regional themes can reflect the variety of traditions in different corners of your own country. How about a traditional New England feast or a Southwest meal? Go down south to Texas and you will find some other favorites you may not have thought to add to your Christmas meal before.

• Holiday movies

Let’s start with holiday movies. Take your favorite movie and use that as a starting point. Use the time period and any mention of food in the movie to set up your menu and what the attire will be for the evening.

These are just a few ideas for a Christmas theme dinner. Be sure to plan early so that everyone can have enough time to add their special touch. It might be a tradition that will carry on for years and years to come.

Patriotic Foods to Tickle the Taste Buds

patriotic-cupcakes

patriotic-cupcakesFood for the 4th of July doesn’t have to be the tried and true. Try making something white, red and blue for your family picnic or gathering! There are some really great ideas out there to make your picnic a patriotic favorite.

Salads are a great choice for a picnic. Not only are they usually easy to make, but they are also great for a hot summer day. Try a tomato salad for your red food. Take cherry tomatoes and also some coarsely chopped firm tomatoes and add some chopped parsley and some basil. Toss in a large bowl with some extra virgin olive oil and you have a great summer salad.

How about potato salad with a twist? Boil ½ pound of blue potatoes with the skins on until they are done but not squishy. Slice a couple of green onions, 3 stalks of celery, 1 tablespoon of parsley flakes and add to the potatoes. For the dressing, add ¼ cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of mustard and gently stir into the vegetables. Blue food done easy!

Pineapple Cream Cheese Salad is a summer treat for everyone. The biggest can of crushed pineapple and drain the juice from it and place in a large measuring cup…add water to equal 2 cups. Heat the water and juice mixture until it boils and then add a package of jello. Make sure to dissolve completely. Remove from heat and add the crushed pineapple and refrigerate until syrupy. While refrigerating that mixture, mash 16 ounces of cream cheese and blend with a blender into the pineapple mixture. Add 1 cup of nuts and ½ pint of whipped cream and blend well. Chill in a 9 x 13 pan then serve your white salad to all your friends and family.

How about an appetizer or finger food for the family on the 4th? All you need is some “red “apples, walnuts, cream cheese and bleu cheese. Take ½ cup of walnuts (chopped), ½ cup of crumbled bleu cheese, 3 tablespoons of softened butter, and 1 small package of cream cheese (8 ounces), and mix together. Chill for 3 hours in the refrigerator; spread on apples that have been sliced and cored, for a delicious mouthwatering treat.

Cheese balls are always a favorite. If you serve this with blue tortilla chips, you have a great blue and white food to serve on Independence Day. You need an 8 ounce package of cream cheese, 1 small onion that is finely chopped, 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, 1 package of crumbled bleu cheese (4 ounces), and some English cheese. Blend together into a ball and chill overnight, and then serve with the tortilla chips.

Now we move on to the main course. Soften several tortilla shells the microwave. Dip in enchilada sauce. Place dipped shell on a plate and add a layer of browned ground beef then some shredded cheese. Repeat until you have 3 layers then add a fried egg to the top and BAM a meal to be remembered!

The 4th of July is not only for chicken and burgers, try this delicious fish recipe and you will have everyone eating out of your hands. Take ¾ cups of blue cornmeal with ½ teaspoon of salt, and 2 garlic cloves or the equivalent in garlic powder, and some jalapeno peppers finely chopped. Fry in a skillet with a little oil until the fish flakes and eat until you are full! What a great change of pace!

Pork chops are a great choice for the 4th also. Using a crock pot, place 6 pork chops in the pot and cook for a couple of hours. Add celery soup (2 cans) and 2 cans of mushroom soup and leave in the crock pot a couple more hours and you have your “white” meat dish available. The pork gets so tender it basically falls apart without any help with a knife!

Mother’s Day Fun for Kids

Serve Mom Breakfast in Bed

It’s usually always Mom that is up at the crack of dawn preparing breakfast for everyone. This would be a great gift for Mom, breakfast in bed. This will allow Mom to sleep in and then surprise her with breakfast in bed.

Keep this breakfast simple. Serve her that favorite muffin or toast, or even a small dish of fresh fruit. Don’t forget to add the steaming cup of hot coffee or tea. Make it even more special with a flower or a card with a special poem straight from your heart.

Give Her the Day to Herself

Of course, Mom loves us very much. Mom’s are always at our side and ready to help out anytime we need something, right? Mom will be so excited when you present her with a coupon for a full day to do whatever it is she wants to do.

This will only require a pretty piece of paper. Then you can create your own special gift certificate allowing her to have one day of total piece and quite. This can be decorated using markers, crayons or stickers.

Present your Mother on Mother’s Day with the gift certificate filled with love. Buy Mom a book that you know she wants to read? This would be great for her day off. Add a cup or a mug with her favorite beverage. This will allow Mom to enjoy her favorite drink while she reads. To help the day remain quite ask the grown up helping you to make sure you are kept busy as well as supervised so that Mom doesn’t have a thing to worry about the whole day long.

Spend Quality Family Time Together

Do you think Mom would rather spend time as a family instead of alone? Plan something fun that Mom will enjoy doing. After all, Mom spends a lot of time making sure that you are entertained. Mom’s often put their own interests aside because they know that you would enjoy doing something else. Repay the kindness to Mom by planning a day of family fun activities that you might not ordinarily do.

Perhaps Mom likes art, take her to the local museum and even have lunch there. If there is a concert Mom would like to see then buy family tickets for all to enjoy. The possibilities for things to do on Mother’s Day are endless. With a little imagination and a little grown up help this Mother’s Day will be one that your Mom will always hold dear to her heart.

Host a Mother-Daughter Tea Party

teaMother’s Day is right around the corner. Now is the time to start planning your special activities for this special day. Have you ever considered a Mother-Daughter tea party? This can include family and friends also. Below are just a few ideas to get your tea party rolling.

Keep in mind that simple is better. If you keep things simple it will be easier and more elegant without all of the worries. Don’t have a full tea set sitting around? You can find some very nice sets in places like Goodwill, flea markets or thrift stores at a very reasonable price. Another idea is to ask everyone to bring their own special set. This will allow everyone to tell why these sets are so special to them.

First things first, decide on a particular theme for your tea party. Below are three simple yet special themes you can try.

The Mother-Daughter Theme

This works well with Mothers who have grown up daughters. Keep the decorations simple like small flower arrangements that will grace the table alongside the tea cups and saucers. This setting will be pleasing to the eyes and the heart. The menu can consist of finger sandwiches, cookies and scones. Have the Mothers and daughters write a note or letter to each sharing how much they love and appreciate each other.

The Mommy & Me Theme

For the Moms of younger girls this will be really cute. Mom can dress up elegantly and the girls can rummage through Mom’s closet to find dresses, shoes, gloves and jewelry to be equally as elegant as Mom. This tea party can include cookies or simple finger foods along with lemonade, punch or hot chocolate. Create the invitations to request every child to bring a stuffed animal guest to share the table.

The Summer Time Tea Party

We all know that Mother’s Day is celebrated in May. This is just prior to the official start of the summer season. Why not take this opportunity to serve flavored iced tea instead. Instead of tea cups use iced tea glasses and serve the typical summer time appetizers. Everyone can dress in straw hats, sunglasses and flip-flops or sandals. This should get you excited about the warmer weather to come.

Brewing tea actually isn’t that difficult. Once you learn the ins and outs you will be able to brew the perfect pot of tea. You can start by purchasing the sampler boxes of tea. This will allow everyone a choice. You can also add flavorings to a glass of iced tea for a refreshing taste.

These are just a few suggestions for a Mother- Daughter tea party. These ideas will make your tea party a success and allow you to have fun and enjoy each others company. Who knows this could become a tradition that could last for generations to come.
